Classification of Aluminum Alloy

Aluminum alloy is the most widely used non-ferrous metal structural material in the industry, and has been widely used in aviation, aerospace, automobile, machinery manufacturing, shipbuilding and chemical industries. 

There are many categories of aluminum alloys, and people use 1-9 series to distinguish aluminum alloys that are not series.Today, let’s take a brief look at the difference between each series.

  1. One series: 1000 series aluminum alloy represents 1050, 1060

​1000 series. Among all the series, the 1000 series belongs to the series with the most aluminum content. The purity can reach more than 99.00%. Since it does not contain other technical elements, the production process is relatively simple and the price is relatively cheap. It is the most commonly used series in conventional industries. Most of the 1050 and 1060 series currently in circulation.

The 1000 series aluminum plate determines the minimum aluminum content of this series according to the last two Arabic numerals. For example, the last two Arabic numerals of the 1050 series are 50. According to the international brand naming principle, the aluminum content must reach more than 99.5% to be qualified products. my country’s aluminum alloy technical standard (gB/T3880-2006) also clearly stipulates that the aluminum content of 1050 should reach 99.5%. For the same reason, the aluminum content of 1060 series aluminum plate must reach more than 99.6%.

2. Second series: 2000 series aluminum alloy represents 2024, 2A16 (LY16), 2A02 (LY6). The 2000 series aluminum plate is characterized by high hardness, among which the copper content is the highest, about 3-5%. 2000 series aluminum rods belong to aviation aluminum materials, which are not often used in conventional industries.

3. Three series: 3000 series aluminum alloy represents 3003, 3A21 mainly. my country’s 3000 series aluminum plate production technology is relatively excellent. 3000 series aluminum rods are mainly composed of manganese. The content is between 1.0-1.5, which is a series with better anti-rust function.

4. Four series: 4000 series aluminum rods are represented by 4A01 4000 series aluminum plates, which belong to the series with higher silicon content. Usually the silicon content is between 4.5-6.0%. It is a building material, a forging material for mechanical parts, a welding material; low melting point, good corrosion resistance, product description: It has the characteristics of heat resistance and wear resistance

5. Five series: 5000 series aluminum alloy represents 5052, 5005, 5083, 5A05 series. 5000 series aluminum rods belong to the more commonly used alloy aluminum plate series, the main element is magnesium, and the magnesium content is between 3-5%. Also known as aluminum-magnesium alloy. The main features are low density, high tensile strength, high elongation and good fatigue strength, but cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. In the same area, the weight of aluminum-magnesium alloy is lower than other series. It is also widely used in conventional industries. In my country, the 5000 series aluminum plate belongs to one of the more mature aluminum plate series.

6. Six series: 6000 series aluminum alloys represent 6061, which mainly contains two elements, magnesium and silicon, so it combines the advantages of 4000 series and 5000 series. Good workability, easy to coat, and good workability. The six series is the mainly used material for extruded aluminum enclosure and die casting case.

7. Seven series: 7000 series aluminum alloy represents 7075 mainly containing zinc. It also belongs to the aviation series. It is an aluminum-magnesium-zinc-copper alloy, a heat-treatable alloy, and a super-hard aluminum alloy with good wear resistance. It also has good weldability, but poor corrosion resistance.

8. Eight series: 8000 series aluminum alloys are more commonly used for 8011, which belong to other series, most of which are used for aluminum foil, and are not commonly used in the production of aluminum rods.

9. Nine series: 9000 series aluminum alloys are backup alloys.
